Intro & Very Likely Updates
We had no new updates to the iPad in 2023 which is funny because in 2022 when Apple put the M2 into the iPad Pro everyone’s like what’s the point it’s already crazy overpowered they might as well have done nothing and now that apple have done nothing this year everyone’s like where’s all the new iPad stuff but it’s coming and in 2024 it looks like there’s going to be some really big upgrades.
So I wanted to talk about what I think is definitely going to happen some stuff which I really hope does happen and then some pie-in-the-sky stuff which I would really love to see but probably won’t. Okay, obvious updates I think we’re going to get OLED on the iPad Pros and especially on the 12.9 inch version for sure I really hope that comes down to the 11inch version of the iPad as well because usually the 12.9 is the only one that gets better screen updates.
This year, I’d love to see it come to both but it will absolutely be coming to the bigger one because those screens are going to OLEDÂ as well Hopefully, it means we’ll get some cool stuff like the iPhone did with standby mode as the iPads will be able to get the screen all the way down to 1 Herz a second which means we should be able to get some cool stuff on display.
While we’re not using it I’d really like to see that happen and obviously those Pro Models would go up to the M3 chip as well they’ve been on the M2 for a while and while that already feels completely overpowered, it’s going to feel even more so this time round but I think that M3 chip will bring in better battery life which is always good and more than anything else this time it’s going to make it a much better tablet for gaming it was already great but with some Hardware accelerated R tracing and things like that which is built into M3 is going to make it an absolute powerhouse.
For that, there’s also the rumor that the pro series of iPads are going to get bigger while remaining the same size by shrinking the bezels ever so slightly so the 11in will go to 11.1 and the 12in will go up to the 13 in obviously they can’t make it like edge to edge because it’s still a tablet you still need to hold on to something and a bezel is ideal for that but it’ll be cool to see a slight design upgrade there. That’s potentially all for the pros for the iPad Air though the rumor this year is we’re going to get a larger version.
So whether that’s an iPad Air Plus or just an iPad Air in a different size (12. 9)
Or something like that looks like it’s going to happen this year which is awesome I also think the air models will jump up to M2 which would be a nice spec bump for them as well it should keep them running for a really long time I don’t think we’re going to get 120 htz on them sadly I think that will literally just stay reserved to the iPad Pros otherwise I don’t think the air is going to see a massive upgrade otherwise other than some new interesting colors this year I think it almost goes without saying hopefully at least anyway.
I hope the iPad Mini will get some love for this long-overdue upgrade. It would be awesome for Apple to go all out on the iPad mini but I genuinely think this is going to be kind of a spec bump as well I think they’ll throw in a newer series chip whether that’s the 16 or the 17 Pro or something like that and maybe just fix the jelly screen but I think that will stay at 60 HZ as well which is sad but totally understandable.
They’re also going to update the iPad 10th generation to the 11th generation and I literally think this will be a processor bump nothing else we’ll just get a newer A16 or whatever they put into it and otherwise, the design will stay exactly the same including the air gap between the screen and I think that’s okay this was an entry-level iPad and getting a little bump there would just be really useful.
Other than that I think all of the iPads, are probably going to get better cameras and I actually think the Pro Models will probably get Apple log recording as well for those people that do film on the iPad.
But otherwise, I think it’s going to be a kind of relatively cool update for the Pro Models the air will get those bigger ones and the Mini should just get a little bump as well. And all of those things alone will be a really nice upgrade to the iPad series as a whole.
Thanks, Paperlike!
Before we carry on I wanted to thank the sponsor of this video paper like and if you weren’t already sure paper like is a screen protector for your iPad that really makes it feel like you’re writing drawing or sketching on paper getting rid of that unnatural feeling of writing on glass and hey if you got a new iPad over the festive period as a gift or even for yourself then protecting the screen is going to be completely worth it in the long run I’ve used paper light for a long time between all of my iPads.
I really do think they’re the way to go if you’re an avid Apple pencil user like I am you’ll notice the difference immediately paper is now better than it’s ever never been before as well it’s on version 2.1 now and it’s made in collaboration with a Swiss-based manufacturer.
This means the layout of the Nano dots which gives it that papery feel is spread out much more evenly and the plastic used is way thinner than it has been before It’s a notable step up in picture clarity than the versions prior and it also means that your iPad stays a lot more visible and bright.
Unlikely Updates
I Love to see what might happen and might not and maybe just some wishful thinking from me but I’d really like to see Apple bin off the ninth-generation iPad and that old iPad Air Design as a whole. Lightning needs to go across all of Apple’s products and the iPad n gen is the only one that has it at the moment but if they get rid of that a lot of the confusion with the iPad lineup will go so we’ll be left with the iPad 11th gen the iPad Air and the iPad Pro and the iPad Mini wherever that decides to slot in but that will be a much neater lineup than it has been before my other h is for 64 GB of storage to just disappear.
I hope all of the iPads start at 128 gigs and upwards maybe even 26 gigs on the pros and that puts it because 64 gig is just such a low amount at the moment even if you utilize a lot of kind of cloud storage and things like that for having apps on device 64 gigs is just really low at the moment so I really hope that goes too. A really big hope of mine though is I hope the iPad Pro range gets an iPad Pro Mini. A lot of us creators out there really love the iPad mini.
And I’ve really enjoyed it throughout 2023 and having an iPad Mini with an OLED screen with 120 HZ and face ID would just be completely awesome it would make it Ultra-powered for gaming as well if it had the M3 in there or even the a17 pro chip but I think the mini line is going to be reserved for the kind of like a more entry-level thing which is a shame but it’s something I would absolutely love to see if Apple did do it I’d also love to see 120 HZ come to the Air models across the board but I generally don’t think it will I think 120 HZ that promotion display will be completely reserved for the Pro Models and I don’t think that will change for many years to come.
I’d really like to see an update to the Apple Magic keyboard. They can keep the design as it is that wonderful floating design it works really really well but I know a lot of us would love to see a function row on that keyboard because the iPad kind of standard one has that and the pro one doesn’t at the moment which is really strange and I would also love to see them put in another USB slot on that keyboard.
It’s got one on the left at the moment which you can use for charging or those sorts of things but I’d love to see one on the right as well. Even if it is just for charging that would be awesome.
It gives you a bit more flexibility, and if there was a way for them to transfer data through there as well that’d be even better. That’s something I would really love to see and while we’re on the topic of keyboards it’d be really really nice to see an iPad Mini keyboard.
Now this would be super Niche and I’m not sure how they would do it but if you imagine the original iPad folio keyboard case which I’ve still got and still use quite a lot to be fair that would be awesome on the mini.
They could make it really tiny and really compact, but I know a few of us would like to see that too.
My DREAM Updates
Those are my wishful-thinking upgrades or upgrades I’d love to see Apple do and kind of in the Realms of possibility but now we’re moving on to Pie in the Sky stuff that I don’t think Apple will ever do but stuff I would absolutely love to see and the first one of those would be mag-safe compatibility
Now on the iPad Mini, you could imagine this working really well and if they’re going to introduce something like standby mode you could put that next to your Mac or computer and have this really nice kind of docking station for your iPad that’s slowly charging it up while also displaying lots of information but if it could do that on the Pro Models and even the bigger models as well even if it was kind of like a proprietary kind of stand or something like that, that’d be really cool.
I’d love to see mag-safe come on there and secondly, jumping off from there I would love to see Apple make an official iPad stand I’ve been using iPad stands for the past year or so and I’ve absolutely loved them.
The way it’s kind of worked with my Mac of universal control and using them in tandem in a productive way has been like a complete joy for me and it’s really changed the way I think about work and all those sorts of things but all the stands have loads of different drawbacks and they’re all totally different and I’d love to see apple make an official iPad stand.
So I can stand it up next to my monitor my studio display or my iMac or anything like that and it just look like it’s part of the ecosystem because all of the stands I’ve used and tried at the moment are all kind of close or nearly there but they still feel a little bit weird to use so I’d love to see Apple’s idea of what that might look like.
The last one which I probably know won’t happen at all is I’d love to see Apple release a complete gaming controller a genuine official Apple gaming controller for use on iPad and Mac and probably any other system as well because when you use a PlayStation 1 or an Xbox or an 8-bit do one or something like that there is the tiniest bit of input lag and you have to be really kind of looking to notice this but it is there and I think if Apple made their own version of that could be awesome.
And it could kind of lean into the fact that these iPads are actually decent for gaming and I’m sure they could make it again feel like part of the ecosystem. It’d be a really interesting thing to take around with you, just having that controller with you at all times anyway.
